Not doing weight training is as taboo as keeping your wife at home in the kitchen and only taking her out on special occasions. It is just plain wrong and too “sixties” for anybody’s liking. If times have changed then why haven’t you kept up with them. There is so much research pointing to health benefit of weight training yet you still stick to your old school ways. Sure your father did it, his grandfather did it and therefore you do it but that doesn’t mean that it is right. It’s time to man up, let your wife be who she wants to be and let your body be the great manly specimen it should be. The liberation movement has begun.
If you are still not convinced perhaps I can persuade you by giving you my top 3 benefits of weight training of all time.
Weight training keeps you lean and mean
Don’t fake smile me, you know you could lose a few kilograms around the gut and if you think by having a double chin it improves your chances of getting the part as the fat slug ‘Jabba the Hutt’s’ brother from a future George Lucas Star Wars film, then you are sadly mistaken. Weight training prevents you from getting fat fast. Because muscle requires a tremendous amount of energy to operate, you can burn calories up to fifteen times faster. The best part about muscle is that it acts like a fuel guzzling car. The bigger the engine the more energy your body needs to function, even at rest. The question you have to ask yourself, do you want a nice little green energy saving machine. Then invest in a bicycle and go and enjoy the fresh air but if you want a body that burns a lot of calories you need to hit the weight section and leave the cycling to the professionals. This has to be the number one benefit of all time. After all, why else did they invent mirrors?
A weight a day keeps the disease away.
Just because you can’t see your heart doesn’t mean you can act like Guy Fieri from food networks diners, drive-ins and dives. You need to start taking care of yourself and what better way to reduce blood pressure by hitting the weights. The heart is a muscle and the stronger the heart becomes, the easier, with less effort the heart has to work in order to pump oxygen nutrient rich blood through the body. Aim for 30 minutes of weight training and medium to high intensity cardio 3 to 4 times a week and see how remarkably your blood pressure reduces to a healthy reading.
Another important disease on the increase is diabetes. There is just simply too much sugar in everything we eat and drink. Since when did good old orange juice contain more sugar than a coke? We are living in mass produced times and cost cutting is everything to manufactures. Most brands use addictive high fructose corn syrup rather than cane sugar because it is incredibly cheaper thanks to the Americans and Japanese scientists. It has never been more important to be exercising in this day and age and that is why you need weight training.
A good time to have a meal is approximately an hour after a great gym session because your body is screaming for food and nutrients. Instead of the sugars from your digested sandwich going to your fat cells to have a sleep over party, your blood quickly uses the nutrients in your blood to repair and replenish vital cells. Keep your training consistent to keep your blood pressure and possible diabetes at bay.
Weights helps take the load off your shoulders.
Ever feel like you have the world on your shoulders. Unless you are one of the worlds strongest men, that weight is not meant for the mere mortal man. Stress and mental fatigue is a real killer concern. You are at work for eight to ten hours a day and I know you sometimes feel like that silver ball in the pinball machine, the punching bag at the gym or the ‘cartoon character ‘Stressed Erik’ with the vein popping out of your forehead. Either way you look at it, you are one unhappy chappy. Weight training not only helps mental fatigue and improves your immune system. After ten minutes of training your body starts releasing the happy drug endorphins which also acts as your body’s natural pain killer. This is a real “two for one” special and no couch in the world can make you feel this good. Take the load, throw around a few weights and get those natural happy drugs running through your body. Your mental health depends on it!
I am sure all you cardio bunnies are wanting to lynch me for my article but the way I see is that time is money and health so why must I sit on a bike or run on the spot for hours when I can do all of that and more for less. My couch, my health and balance in life is important to me, so why not choose what science and research at this point in time, deems best.
