One of the premier events of the year is the Customer Electronic Show – CES where Vegas showcases some of the future technologies that is coming our way. Never mind the 110inch Samsung TV that was on display but there were 2 very interesting bits of technology that is going change the way we interact with health.
I am sure you are all familiar with the scale, you climb on it…naked of course just in case your shoes and clothing add extra weight to the numbers. It proceeds by telling you a lie and then you storm off cussing at why the scale is always telling you the wrong weight. If only technology could get better. Well it has, and now the lie can be tracked. The new super scale accurately tracks your weight, your body fat percentage, your BMI and paints a picture online of your long term progress according to FITbit by Aria.
What makes this scale amazing is that it can wirelessly connect via WIFI to your mobile phone and upload your data where you can visually track via graphs and charts your every encounter with your scale. The scale can discreetly track up to 8 family members for families and presidents with larger households.
The second cool device is the Basis Band which is ultimately a watch and a fitness tracker combined. The primary function is to tell time but it will also track your every step, your heart rate, your skin temperature and the amount of calories you have burnt in the day. Your days of swinging your pedometer around the office to count fake steps are numbered. The office health challenge just got more sophisticated. You don’t have to give back all those office prizes but it does require you to start becoming more active.
This multi-dimensional device allows you to get to know yourself better. The most amazing part of this technology is that it can also monitor your sleep patterns by tracking your heart rate. It will be able to tell you if you had a good night sleep or which parts of your sleep you were restless. After a week’s sleep tracking, you will know why you are energizes each morning or why you feel like you need another 14 hours sleep. Basis Science inc believes that in order to change a poor lifestyle you need to create good habits and good habit are brought about by small changes consistently.
Technology is moving towards being more self-aware of your behaviours and technology is allowing you to highlight simple things each day that you are doing that might be affecting your health negatively. A simple example to how power this technology is would be to track your sleep patterns after a high action packed movie or after eating a heavy meal. You can see if these types of activities have any impact on your sleep rhythm. I know from a very young age that closing the door on my fingers was probably not the best thing to do and won’t do it again.
By knowing certain activities are going to have an adverse effect on your next days performance such as an important match or an important business meeting; you will make better choices. Choosing a romantic comedy with some hot coca will be a better choice than the new Bruce Willis movie. Right now as humans we are going about each day just doing without knowing. Knowledge acquired through tracking can lead to small changes in behaviour which can lead to greater positive changes and new healthy behaviours. If health is important to you, then look to technology to create a happier you.
